3-d Context Modeling Approach for Grayscale Image Coding Based on Bit-plane

It is well known that one can improve the coding ee-ciency by employing high-order conditional probability. However, it is very diicult to implement compression of grayscale image using high-order conditional entropy (HOCE) coding due to the requirement of a huge table of conditional pdf's. This paper presents a method to cope this problem. We use the bit-plane decomposition as an alternative that bypasses some of the implementation diiculties of HOCE coding. Gray bit-plane decomposition is also adopted to take the advantage of coherence between bit planes. We develope 3-D context model based on the pixels from the current as well as previous bit-planes. We also utilize the context merge technique to reduce complexity. In addition, our experiments demonstrate that compression using 3-D context model yeilds better perfomance than conventional 2-D context model approaches.
